2007-08 Carolina Panthers

Critics comment on the Panthers lack of depth and instability. This season it seems the stakes are all on John Fox and Jake Delhomme. Will Fox keep his cool and make up for his lackluster past season? While that is a problem, the underperforming O Line may be as well. Carolina needs to sharpen its focus to be able to go up against Jacksonville and Dallas.  Success this season may come down on the linebackers as well, if they stay healthy.  In spite of his small stature, Steve Smith will be one to watch, as he has proven to be an amazing talent as a WR. Dan Morgan is also a fantastic LB when he’s healthy. Panthers ticket buyers might have some surprises this season.

Previous Seasons

In the off-season the Carolina Panthers made a number of moves that weren’t the easiest moves to make, but they were the right moves. They had to let go of All-Pro wide receiver Mushin Muhammad who was arguably the best receiver in the NFC last year, as far as stats are concerned. He wanted more money than the Panthers were willing to pay him so they had to part ways. It was a tough decision for the Panthers to make, but they should have some adequate replacements for him.

The Panthers did make some big additions to their team in spite of losing that talent. They picked up free safety Idrees Bashir who was a very solid defender while playing for the Indianapolis Colts the past few seasons. The team also picked up experienced defensive backs Marlon McCree and Ken Lucas. Both of these players are getting on a little in years, but their experience will be immeasurable with the young secondary the Panthers have roaming the field.

The Panthers also went out and got tight end Freddie Jones, who was one of the more productive tight ends in recent memory, but he decided to hang his cleats up and retire before he even took his first snap with his new team.

In the draft, the Panthers help patch up some holes that needed filling. With their first pick they grabbed Thomas Davis, who was slated to play linebacker at Georgia and then a slew of injuries in the secondary moved him to free safety. He starred there as a free safety, but has the size to be an outside linebacker. The Panthers are convinced that one day they will be featuring him as a linebacker, but for the near future he will just be a free safety. With their second pick, they selected Louisville running back Eric Shelton. This was a great pick for the Panthers since their number one and number two running backs have both been battling the injury bug for the past couple of seasons.

The Panthers offense is almost always over-looked since their defense is so imposing, but, in all actuality, they are one of the best offensive teams in the NFC. They are led by quarterback Jake Delhomme, who would’ve been the Super Bowl MVP in ’03 if they had managed to win that game. The offensive line is a very solid unit and they should be opening up a number of holes. The big question coming out of camp is, “who will be running through those holes?” The team insists that Stephen Davis should be ready to go by the time the season is going, but if he isn’t back up Deshaun Foster isn’t the portrait of perfect health. He has missed significant amounts of time since he came into the league.

The defense is what coach John Fox is all about. The team is one of the fiercest defenses in the entire league. They have the best defensive line around with Julius Peppers and Kris Jenkins anchoring it. They are arguably the best at each one of their respective positions.
